An analysis of the development of American schooling within the context of American social history. Focus on three general themes: the differing conceptions of schooling held by leading American educational thinkers; the changing relationships among schools and such other educational institutions as the church and the family; and the policy issues and arguments that have shaped the development of schooling in America.
