This concentration explores imperial domination from the early modern period to the present. Topics of interest include connections between political control and economic extraction; the making of boundaries as well as colonial and imperial others through race, sexuality, and culture; and resistance to colonialism, which brought political change and new epistemologies. The concentration also includes attention to indigenous and post-colonial perspectives, which are critical in the assessment of empire and its afterlives. Faculty expertise spans South Asia, East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe.
