International, Transnational, and Global History

International, Transnational, and Global History

This concentration moves beyond the conventional regional and temporal specificity of area studies or national histories and encourages students to explore how different world regions connect with each other. Subjects include transnational connections (such as migrant flows or political ideas), global transformations (such as pandemic or environmental catastrophes), and the emergence of universalist and internationalist ideologies and institutions (such as Marxism, human rights, or the World Health Organization). An alternative approach would be to study multinational or multiethnic regions of the world (e.g., the Mediterranean, the Atlantic world, the Indian Ocean).
