International Urban History
This concentration studies cities as political, economic, social, and cultural hubs that offer a unique vantage point from which to understand historical changes across time and place. Topics include the use and reuse of urban space; the built environment as a reflection and source of social struggle and transformation; the transnational flow of capital, labor, and goods through cities; and the distinctive impact of race and ethnicity on urban life. Faculty expertise spans a wide range of locations and times, from medieval Italian hill towns to early and modern cities in China and the U.S., to colonial and post-colonial cities in Mexico and Egypt.
