Introduction to World History: World War I in World History

HISTORY 173

Owing to its unprecedented scale and intensity, World War I transformed societies and cultures across the world. In contrast to conventional studies emphasizing political, diplomatic, or military developments of the war, this course investigates how the war shaped daily lives of ordinary people all over the world in multifaceted ways. We will critically engage with a broad range of primary and secondary sources in order to assess interplays between local actors and global forces before, during, and after the war. This approach will enable us to not only evaluate the war from a more comprehensive perspective, but also better appreciate how local responses differed based on places, socioeconomic backgrounds, occupations, ethnicities, or genders.
