Science, Medicine, Technology, Environment
This concentration investigates the history of science, technology, medicine, and the environment in connection to larger political, social, cultural, economic, and intellectual developments. It grapples with questions about origins and influence, expertise, and the contributions of various actors—from physicians and scientists to patients and marginalized communities—in making and unmaking knowledge. Faculty expertise spans Europe, the United States, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, from the early modern period to the present. Students also have the opportunity to work with faculty located in other units, including anthropology, art history, classics, and medical humanities, as well as various language and area studies programs.
