Nan-Hsu Chen is a Ph.D. candidate in history at Washington University in St. Louis. He studies Chinese borderlands and maritime Asia. His current project investigates how populations of frontier Taiwan evaluated, constructed, and reoriented their relationships with external political authorities in an East Asian context over the nineteenth century.
