This course examines the social, cultural, intellectual, and political history of late medieval and Renaissance Italy: civic life and urban culture; the crisis of the fourteenth century; the city-states of Renaissance Italy; the revival of classical antiquity; art and humanism of the Renaissance; culture, poliics, and society; Machiavelli and Renaissance political thought; the wars of Italy; religious crisis and religious reaction in the sixteenth century.
