Decolonization to Globalization: How to End an Empire

History 4154 - Spring 2021

Independence from European colonialism was a victory for some people, although for the majority, the experience of nation-building and the Cold War only sanctioned further inequities. A further set-back arrived in the guise of Globalization. The countries of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri-Lanka have grappled differently with the many varieties of twentieth century transnational power. This course studies the histories of decolonization, nation-building and the Cold War for those South Asian countries created since the 1940s and traces the manner by which ordinary people have interrogated the multiple levels of state power unleashed upon them since the formal end of European colonialism.
