Topics in American Culture Studies: American Reckoning: Reparations from the Plantation to Ferguson

What are some of the contemporary ways in which we encounter Asian Americans? Is it through news of the pandemic, TikTok, panda economy with China, affirmative action oppositions, or through authentic Asian restaurants on Instagram? This course will provide students with an opportunity to read some of the latest works in Asian American literatures and tap into contemporary discussions that new Asian American authors are broaching in the fields of ethnic progress or lack of it, politics, mental health, gender, and sexualities. Drawing from Asian American literatures in the last 10 years, we will trace the capacious "new" ways in in which Asian Americans are shaping, intervening, and globalizing the face of ethnic presence in the U.S. today. In the spirit of summer, buckle up for some current reads, engage with critical thinking on contemporary issues, practice analytical writing, and get creative with suggestions on contemporary areas of discussions in Asian American Studies.
